Olivier Vilaire alias Oski Awoyo tells us the story of how he came to paint, whether in Haiti or in Montreal.
The artist often uses the metaphors of sport and love to characterize his creative process. In his very physical relationship to the canvas and to pictoriality, the movements, the approaches, the challenges, the struggles, the surpassing of oneself, the deliverances, the contentments and renunciations echo as much the challenges and athletic efforts as the games and the “fires” of love.
The gushing and recurring bursts that make up some of his works are not excluded from a sense of violence (internal or collective, suffered or witnessed?). His artistic approach text states, “the paintings are imbued with an energy of someone who seems to be seeking liberation; there flows a poetic expression free from prejudice, free from the chains of time, free from physical constraints, free to listen and compose his astral song.”
In this video portrait, from the studio to Oski Awoyo’s apartment, we observe the city, look through a family album and hear voices. Indeed, with sagacity, his artist colleague and accomplice Clovis-Alexandre Desvarieux encourages him to dive in.
