Igor Zigor

Igor Zigor (°1994, Tiohtà:ke I Montréal) is a self-taught artisan and artist, currently experimenting with various creative and artistic approaches. He primarily creates sculptural works through labour-intensive processes, which can be explicitly seen as a ritual of personal exorcism. Respect for the materiality of nature is fundamental to him. His works are distinguished by their organic finish and tactile nature, showcasing significant craftsmanship.
By re-contextualizing history through a current and unconventional approach, he attempts to reconsider them by exploring his surroundings in a fragile and nostalgic manner. He holds great respect for his environment, particularly nature, striving to do it justice daily.
Fostering an even closer relationship with his heritage and roots, both literally and figuratively, he has been sourcing wood from his family’s land for several years. He ensures he is involved in every stage of raw material transformation, deconstructing and reconstructing them in the most ethical manner possible. Thus, he primarily works with what nature provides, reversing the current societal relationship with production.
With a desire for a purer practice and creation, he aims to return to the very source around us for creation; the raw materials—organic, natural, artificial, human—and the history they carry. It is through this anthropological inquiry that he seeks to question and critique our modern society and those that preceded us, aiming to better distinguish surface from superficiality, and consequently, material from materiality.
With a strong connection to Mexico, the artist spends a good part of the year there, experimenting with various artistic mediums and techniques alongside local artists and artisans.
