Pierre Dorion and Élise Lafontaine in conversation
Animated by Daniel Fiset

Presented by Esse as part of Pictura
Tuesday, October 24, 6 p.m., at Livart

If painting is the site of many historical debates and formal and aesthetic stances, it has also formed dialectically, in comparison with other media that were predicted to eventually replace it – photography, in the forefront. An overview of current painting practices suggests the opposite, however: that painting has been invigorated by its permeability and porosity to other, often photographic, ways of seeing and representing, such as the fragment, the snapshot or the cut.

This discussion between Pierre Dorion and Élise Lafontaine will provide an opportunity to see how contemporary artists mobilize painting as an index, at the crossroads between experience and its representation. Particular attention will be paid to the presence of photography in both artists’ work, as well as to the mobilization of installation devices that (re)give their paintings a sculptural or architectural quality.
